The Teaching and Leadership Community of Practice invite any interested MQ staff to come along to our final two events for 2021, whether or not your role is in the Teaching and Leadership job family.

1. Leadership in learning & teaching: panel discussion

Monday 15 November: 10-11am

We’ve invited 3 prominent leaders of learning and teaching at Macquarie to be on a panel to discuss what leadership of learning and teaching looks like for them, and how they got into it. The panelists are:

  • Associate Professor Wylie Bradford, Department of Economics, Deputy Chair of Academic Senate
  • Professor Matt Bower, Macquarie School of Education, Chair of Senate Learning & Teaching Committee
  • Professor Dominique Parrish, Pro-Vice Chancellor Learning and Teaching

2. Emotionally intelligent leadership in higher education

Tuesday 16 November: 1.30-2pm

Professor Dominique Parrish (Pro Vice-Chancellor, Learning and Teaching) is our guest at the November meeting of the Teaching & Leadership Community of Practice speaking on the topic of Emotionally Intelligent Leadership in Higher Education.

Research has found that emotional intelligence is critical for higher education leadership. However, emotional intelligence is reportedly still undervalued by institutions and lacking in many HE leaders. This presentation will share research findings identifying emotional intelligence leadership capabilities deemed most pertinent for higher education leaders in formal roles. An inventory of emotionally intelligent leadership capabilities posited as critical to successful and effective higher education leadership in formal roles (e.g. Vice Chancellor, Head of School or Department) will be presented along with those capabilities perceived to be in most need of development in each role category.

What is the Teaching & Leadership Community of Practice?

Since its inception in November 2020, this network has grown to over 80 members who meet monthly to shape how we lead learning and teaching collectively and collaboratively across the university, provide input on professional development for leaders of learning and teaching and, at the same time, learn from peers.

If you are interested in joining this group, we’d love to see you.
